Ablative techniques destroy the top layer of your skin (epidermis), whereas non-ablative techniques don’t destroy your epidermis. Ablative laser resurfacing techniques destroy the top layer of your skin to expose the lower layers and encourage new growth. Non-ablative techniques encourage new growth without removing the top layer of your skin. A newer type of laser facial resurfacing is fractional resurfacing. In this procedure, the laser is used on certain parts of the treatment area only, rather than all of it and you have the treatment over several sessions. Non-ablative techniques have a lower risk of side-effects and faster recovery time.
